In this article, the church could mean the people (Christians) who gather in a place of worship to have fellowship, while the place of worship (in which they gather) could also mean ‘church’.
Naturally, backbiting does not promote love, unity, progress and establishment. On the other hand, it promotes dissension, rivalry, enmity, hatred and any other form of elements that could lead to retardation – in an organisation.
Backbiting has been described as to, ‘Say mean things’.
When you say mean things, you can always say things that are beyond peaceful coexistence or tolerance: you will say things that project the subject of your discussion in bad light.
Whereas, the Bible said that everything should be done in orderly manner, “Let all things be done decently and in order”, 1 Cor 14:40, KJV.
Backbiting does harm to the church
Some people make this a habitual thing. It is what they delight in: they cannot live without it.
Whether they backbite on truth or lies, they must have something to say about anyone that they do not like. Sometimes, it could just be that the subject of their discussion is poor, has deformity, speaks bad English or dresses below standard – they have been provided with grounds for backbiting, and they must do justice to it.
Notwithstanding, everyone that indulges in such habit should know that he/she is tearing the body of Christ apart. This is because backbiting does not produce good fruits: instead of friendship – it produces enmity.
The body of Christ, as a living organism, needs love to grow and produce fruits that will remain. Hence, Christ told the disciples that they must live in love (one to another).
“A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another”, John 13:34-35, KJV.
How to avoid backbiting
According to 1 Corinthians 13:13, charity is greater than faith and hope (key to working with and receiving from God).
It is also noteworthy that charity could be used as ‘brotherly love’, but how do you promote brotherly love (in the cause of not forsaking the assembly of believers) when you backbite in the church?
You got to love people as yourself then: that is why Jesus declared that you must remove the beam in your own eyes before removing the mote in your brother’s eyes. Watch yourself and discover things that you will like to do away with so that you can have a good fellowship with God.
The quality of your relationship with God, Christ and the Holy Spirit will reflect in how you handle your affairs with other people.
When some of your friends decide to backbite with you, your response(s) to them will let them have changes of heart too.
These steps are finally required
You need to pray where you are reading this. Now, open your mouth and declare how you want God to refresh you. Pray in the name of Jesus Christ.
For your orderly growth, you need to read the Bible and pray daily: find a church that (sincerely) declares the mind of God through sound teaching and (you should) start to worship there.
God bless you.
